{"id":9573,"date":"2021-06-01T13:11:00","date_gmt":"2021-06-01T11:11:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=9573"},"modified":"2021-09-16T14:46:03","modified_gmt":"2021-09-16T12:46:03","slug":"a-classical-update-in-a-digital-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=9573","title":{"rendered":"A classical update in a digital world"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike in the digital world, where an update comes from out of nowhere, or perhaps from the clouds above &#8211; overnight and undercover, or intruding unannounced in the light of day, there remain great collections of human thought and knowledge, remnants from times passed, that demand meticulous review; and under the auspices of the human brain that understands memory as more than a machine, that pays little regard to bits and bytes, and timeouts, rather dedicates its own finely wired synapses to the higher arts of scholarship &#8211; perseverance, selection, reflection, accuracy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Such may be said of the just published <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.classics.cam.ac.uk\/research\/projects\/glp\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Cambridge Greek Lexicon <\/em>(Cambridge University Press)<\/a>. <em>[On the website is a trove of information, including the history and methodology of the project, an extended video introduction and reference material and links.] <\/em>Over twenty years in compilation; what was originally conceived as a revision of HG Liddell and Robert Scott\u2019s\u00a0legendary 1889 <em>Intermediate Greek-English Lexicon<\/em>, after due consideration and because of its antiquated form, had morphed into a completely new project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"The Cambridge Greek Lexicon\" width=\"840\" height=\"473\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5ryhFSq2H8k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Classics at Cambridge: Introducing the &#8220;The Cambridge Greek Lexicon&#8221; <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2021\/may\/27\/first-english-dictionary-of-ancient-greek-since-victorian-era-spares-no-blushes-lexicon-classics\">This <em>Guardian<\/em> piece<\/a> informs of what is in and what is not, and delights in giving us the down and dirty &#8211; or &#8220;earthy&#8221; as they call it.  Some may say, well &#8230; and with a blush! To rejoin: Shame on those who go digging in ancient ground and shun at getting hands dirty! And though blushing, I quote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8230;The verb \u03c7\u03ad\u03b6\u03c9 (<em>chezo<\/em>), translated by Liddell and Scott as \u201cease oneself, do one\u2019s need\u201d, is defined in the new dictionary as \u201cto defecate\u201d and translated as \u201cto shit\u201d; \u03b2\u03b9\u03bd\u03ad\u03c9 (<em>bineo<\/em>) is no longer \u201cinire, coire, of illicit intercourse\u201d, but \u201cfuck\u201d; \u03bb\u03b1\u03b9\u03ba\u03ac\u03b6\u03c9 (<em>laikazo<\/em>), in the 19th-century dictionary translated as \u201cto wench\u201d, is now defined as \u201cperform fellatio\u201d and translated as \u201csuck cocks\u201d.<\/p><cite>The Guardian, 27th May 2021<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whatever would the Messrs. Liddell and Scott think! Whether these new volumes will endure as long as their predecessor only time will tell but it is interesting to contemplate how language and custom may develop in the next hundred years or so (hopefully, it will still be determined by the living, breathing not an artificial intelligence!) &#8211; and in which direction!
