{"id":9090,"date":"2021-04-29T11:57:00","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T09:57:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=9090"},"modified":"2021-05-19T14:54:52","modified_gmt":"2021-05-19T12:54:52","slug":"words-never-fail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=9090","title":{"rendered":"Words never fail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sadly, many things failed Virginia Woolf, but what very rarely did, were words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reminded by hearing <a href=\"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=8813\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8813\">Gillian Anderson&#8217;s recitation<\/a> of Virginia Woolf&#8217;s suicide note, and remembering <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=8529\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"8529\" target=\"_blank\">that from Juliet Stevenson<\/a>, I want to <em>record<\/em> here <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/culture\/article\/20160324-the-only-surviving-recording-of-virginia-woolf\" target=\"_blank\">the only surviving <em>recording<\/em><\/a> of Woolf&#8217;s voice. <em>Recorded<\/em> on this day in 1937 for a <em>BBC<\/em> program entitled &#8220;Words Fail Me&#8221;, listening to the surviving segment through all the noise and crackle of years gone by, one can still discern the so-admired and oft commented upon sonorous quality of her voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-soundcloud wp-block-embed-soundcloud wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"On Craftsmanship: The only surviving recording of Virginia Woolf&#039;s voice by brainpicker\" width=\"840\" height=\"400\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"no\" src=\"https:\/\/w.soundcloud.com\/player\/?visual=true&#038;url=https%3A%2F%2Fapi.soundcloud.com%2Ftracks%2F76318444&#038;show_artwork=true&#038;maxwidth=840&#038;maxheight=1000&#038;dnt=1\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption>Virginia Woolf, segment from Words Fail Me, BBC, April 29, 1937<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The radio essay was adapted to the written form as <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/gutenberg.net.au\/ebooks12\/1203811h.html#ch-25\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Craftsmanship&#8221;<\/a>; collected by Leonard in the posthumous volume <em>The Death of the Moth and other Essays<\/em> (1942). There, I notice that her essay is dated as 20th April, 1937, so perhaps she wrote it up cleanly the week before, or her dating (or Leonard&#8217;s) went awry. One can presume the <em>BBC<\/em> is correct. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This and other anomalies surrounding this and other recordings and transcripts <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/www.virginiawoolfsociety.org.uk\/resources\/virginia-woolfs-broadcasts-and-her-recorded-voice\/\" target=\"_blank\">are written about here<\/a> by S.N.
