Lighter work, for sure, to deconstruct the person. The philosopher, Julian Baggini, reviews Peter Salmon&#8217;s book <em><strong>An Event, Perhaps: A Biography of Jacques Derrida<\/strong><\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.prospectmagazine.co.uk\/magazine\/jacques-derrida-philosopher-not-overrated\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bernhard Schlink&#8217;s <em>The Reader<\/em> found critical acclaim and a worldwide audience, but had its detractors in Germany &#8211; not an apologist work, but, if sought, excuses for a nations fall into barbarism are too easily to be discerned. His 2018 novel <em>Olga,<\/em> <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/nov\/17\/olga-by-bernhard-schlink-review-from-prussia-with-love\" target=\"_blank\">just published in English<\/a>, received here a fairly tepid reception &#8211; a woman&#8217;s fate through the panorama of German history from the <em>Kaiserreich<\/em> through the 20th century; and character just too good to be true?  History tells us, there were many more &#8220;Hannas&#8221; (the illiterate guard of <em>The Reader<\/em>) than there were &#8220;Olgas&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enjoyed very much (hardly a surprise!) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.alexandraharris.co.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Alexandra Harris&#8217;s<\/a> perceptive commentary on Virginia Woolf&#8217;s reading habits and expectations. In Virginia Woolf&#8217;s own words, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/gutenberg.net.au\/ebooks03\/0301251h.html#e26\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;How Should One Read a Book&#8221;<\/a> from<em> The Common Reader, Second Series.<\/em> Woolf may have suggested to Schlink&#8217;s young reader (in <em>The Reader<\/em>), to keep the best of it to himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reading, with all its extended connotations, may well bind them, but strange bedfellows these three. I love Andrew Marr &#8211; he can bring together disparate voices to a successful <em>m\u00e9nage \u00e0 trois<\/em>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Start the week with Andrew Marr and a good listen, then read on.
