{"id":3756,"date":"2020-06-09T15:02:08","date_gmt":"2020-06-09T13:02:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/localhost:8888\/wordpress_test\/?p=3756"},"modified":"2023-09-29T10:43:30","modified_gmt":"2023-09-29T08:43:30","slug":"there-are-authors-and-there-are-authors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=3756","title":{"rendered":"There are authors and there are authors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coincidental to the racism discussion whirling about us in recent weeks; one thing leading to another, to another and so forth &#8230; then to Jesmyn Ward (see my <a href=\"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=3707\" data-type=\"3707\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">last post<\/a>), her picture in <em>The New York Times<\/em> today almost jumped out upon me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In short, a <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23PublishingPaidMe\" target=\"_blank\">#PublishingPaidMe<\/a> has been making an impact (hesitate to say &#8220;gone viral&#8221; <em>[sic]<\/em>) highlighting as it does the disparity in advances given to white and black (and minority) writers in the United States (only the US?). Many writers are risking the ire of their publishers (and maybe even agents) and shining a not terribly flattering light on apparently inequitable structures in an industry that generally speaking tends to the liberal side of things. In respect to Jesmyn Ward the <em>NYT<\/em> reports:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jesmyn Ward, a critically acclaimed novelist, said on Twitter that she \u201cfought and fought\u201d for her first $100,000 advance, even after her book \u201cSalvage the Bones,\u201d for which she said she received around $20,000, won a National Book Award in 2011. After switching publishers, she was able to negotiate a higher advance for \u201cSing, Unburied, Sing\u201d \u2014 for which she&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/11\/15\/books\/review\/national-book-award-jesmyn-ward.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won a second National Book Award<\/a>, in 2017 \u2014 but, she said, \u201cit was still barely equal to some of my writer friends\u2019 debut novel advances.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"> A spokeswoman for Bloomsbury Publishing, which published \u201cSalvage the Bones\u201d and Ms. Ward\u2019s memoir \u201cMen We Reaped,\u201d said that the company does not comment on advances paid to authors, but that it was honored to have published her books.<\/p>\n<cite><a href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/3h7o00O\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The New York Times, June 8, 2020.<\/a><\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Love that:<em>\u201c<\/em>&#8230;honored to have published her books&#8221;!
