Welcomed by <em>Wolf Hall<\/em> fans everywhere, and in London <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"with long queues (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2020\/mar\/05\/ive-been-waiting-years-for-this-midnight-queues-as-the-mirror-the-light-finally-hits-shelves\" target=\"_blank\">with long queues<\/a> &#8211; though why that should be necessary in this day and age I really wouldn&#8217;t know &#8211; and with various degrees of mostly ecstatic reviews. Ms. Mantel it seems has survived the hype &#8211; alone that, a feat! At almost 900 pages I will need some time, but time that will absolutely be found, and sooner I hope rather than later. I had pondered some time last year returning to the first two of the trilogy in preparation, unfortunately&#8230;! Perhaps a browse back is in order, and the hope that knowing we are rid (to put it crudely!) of More and Boleyn and approximately how we got there is enough! Maybe a little more than a browse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"Here is a NY Times review (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/32KmtHs\" target=\"_blank\">Here is a NY Times review<\/a>, and also an informative <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"magazine piece (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/37UQzc4\" target=\"_blank\">magazine piece<\/a> on Mantel. Should you have access, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"The Time Literary Supplement review (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-tls.co.uk\/articles\/the-mirror-and-the-light-hilary-mantel-book-review\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Time Literary Supplement<\/em> review<\/a>  by Edmund Gordon will surely persuade the unpersuaded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/602px-CromwellThomas1EEssex01.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2431\" width=\"243\" height=\"291\"\/><figcaption><em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portrait_of_Thomas_Cromwell\">Portrait of Thomas Cromwell<\/a><\/em>,<br><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hans_Holbein_the_Younger\">Hans Holbein the Younger<\/a>&nbsp;(1532\u20131533), The Frick Collection.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the way, Holbein, whose portrait of Th. Cromwell is perhaps the most recognisable reproduction, and whose rising star in the Tudor court was courtesy of the patronage of Cromwell, has again a recurring presence in this final novel of the series and with psychological dimensions beyond the historical or purely narrative; <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"another NY Times review (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/nyti.ms\/2Thauwy\" target=\"_blank\">another NY Times review<\/a> (this time from Thomas Mallon) makes the interesting observation: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>&#8220;&#8230;For all its political and literary plotting, \u201cThe Mirror and the Light\u201d is most memorable for its portraiture, with Cromwell acting as our Holbein, challenging us to weigh his interpretive assessments against our enormous accumulated knowledge of his concerns, biases and kinks.&#8221;<\/p><cite>The New York Times, Book Review, Feb. 25 2020<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;The Mirror &amp; The Light&#8221; by Hilary Mantel Hilary Mantel&#8217;s The Mirror &amp; The Light is out today!
