{"id":174,"date":"2019-01-06T12:43:46","date_gmt":"2019-01-06T11:43:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/annedromache.wordpress.com\/?p=174"},"modified":"2023-10-16T15:46:04","modified_gmt":"2023-10-16T13:46:04","slug":"the-guardian-books-to-read-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=174","title":{"rendered":"The Guardian:  Books to read 2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>The Guardian<\/em> has a good preview <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/books\/2019\/jan\/05\/2019-in-books-a-literary-calendar?utm_term=RWRpdG9yaWFsX0Jvb2ttYXJrcy0xOTAxMDY%3D&amp;utm_source=esp&amp;utm_medium=Email&amp;utm_campaign=Bookmarks&amp;CMP=bookmarks_email\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> of books to be published (in the UK anyway) in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"  wp-image-175 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/2560-e1546778062494-1.jpg\" alt=\"Guardian books 2019\" width=\"351\" height=\"210\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Some that particularly interest me are:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Fiction<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tessa Hadley&#8217;s<em> Late in the Day<\/em> &#8211; a favourite, who writes about lives that I know or want to know, or have lived.<\/li>\n<li><em>Spring\u00a0<\/em>by Ali Smith &#8211; Problem! I have to read <em>Autumn<\/em> and <em>Winter<\/em> first! But I&#8217;m getting used to playing catch up.<\/li>\n<li><em>Olive, Again<\/em> by Elizabeth Strout &#8211; Yes, I have read <em>Olive Ketteridge, <\/em>sono\u00a0catching up required here!<\/li>\n<li>Colson Whitehead&#8217;s <em>The Nickel Boys<\/em>\u00a0&#8211; hopefully a worthy follow up to <em>The Underground Railroad<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Siri Hustvedt&#8217;s new book &#8211; are there ever enough writing lives?<\/li>\n<li>A first short story collection from <em>Zadie Smith.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>I love Ian McEwan &#8211; from the blurb,\u00a0<em>Machines Like Me<\/em> is not necessarily what I would read, but love is love so &#8230;<\/li>\n<li>Margaret Atwood &#8211; enough said.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration:underline;\">Non-fiction<\/span>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Any bookish sort would find <em>The Library Book<\/em> from Susan Orlean pretty hard to resist.<\/li>\n<li>I&#8217;m interested in the Bauhaus movement on many levels, so the <em>Gropius<\/em> biography by Fiona MacCarthy is a must.<\/li>\n<li>Anything <em>Toni Morrison<\/em> has to say is okay by me &#8211; here a collection of essays.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What I do miss is Hilary Mantel&#8217;s final Cromwell instalment, <em>The Mirror and the Light. The Guardian<\/em>\u00a0doesn&#8217;t seem to have comments running on this, so I did a look around, and at least in the summer Mantel seemed certain of a 2019 publication. \u00a0Given the enormous interest, I am surprised that there is no news available.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Guardian has a good preview here of books to be published (in the UK anyway) in 2019.
