Norton (2023)<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To whet the appetite, some of the first reviews:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/09\/23\/books\/review\/iliad-homer-emily-wilson.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Natalie Haynes in the<em> NYTimes<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/plus.thebulwark.com\/p\/preserving-homers-magic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Daniel Walden: <em>The Bulwark<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/books\/2023\/09\/21\/iliad-translation-emily-wilson-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nao\u00edse Mac Sweeney: <em>The Washington Post<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spectator.co.uk\/article\/the-bloody-prequel-a-triumphant-new-translation-of-the-iliad\/\" target=\"_blank\">A.E. Stallings: <em>The Spectator<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/yalereview.org\/article\/emily-greenwood-emily-wilson-the-iliad\">Emily Greenwood: <em>The Yale Review<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">No, they have not been thoroughly read, but I can say the headers and quick scans of each suggest &#8211; more than suggest &#8211; high praise, and sung in unison. Which would delight the Muses no end. Emily Wilson, herself, seemed particularly taken with <em>The Bulwark<\/em> (not known to me &#8211; looks really interesting, but mostly sub. based) piece. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Beyond the book, gossipy even (and adventurous: wouldn&#8217;t you like an assignment that takes you to Ithaca? And not that one in the Empire State), is <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judith_Thurman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Judith Thurman&#8217;s<\/a> piece for <em>The New Yorker<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/magazine\/2023\/09\/18\/emily-wilson-profile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">&#8220;How Emily Wilson Made Homer Modern&#8221;<\/a>. An entertaining read, though the &#8220;modern&#8221; of the title, if one is to understand correctly Wilson&#8217;s comments in the above thread where she makes a point of voicing her displeasure at a simple reception with the claim of &#8220;modernizing Homer&#8221;, is probably misplaced. Also, <a data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16939\" href=\"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?p=16939\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Charlotte Higgins&#8217; piece in <em>The Guardian<\/em><\/a> a couple of weeks ago writes of the the technical choices Wilson contended with in her translation of the <em>Iliad <\/em>that culminated in today&#8217;s publication.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And at <em>Lit Hub<\/em>, Emily Wilson in conversation with her friend, <a href=\"http:\/\/madelinemiller.com\/\">Madeline Miller<\/a>, reveals further insights into her methodology as a translator, the psychological depth of Homer&#8217;s poetry and into her character interpretations &#8211; also a great read:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-wp-embed is-provider-literary-hub wp-block-embed-literary-hub\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"aB9DVSCA9X\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/enduring-epics-emily-wilson-and-madeline-miller-on-breathing-new-life-into-ancient-classics\/\">Enduring Epics: Emily Wilson and Madeline Miller on Breathing New Life Into Ancient Classics<\/a><\/blockquote><iframe loading=\"lazy\" class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Enduring Epics: Emily Wilson and Madeline Miller on Breathing New Life Into Ancient Classics&#8221; &#8212; Literary  Hub\" src=\"https:\/\/lithub.com\/enduring-epics-emily-wilson-and-madeline-miller-on-breathing-new-life-into-ancient-classics\/embed\/#?secret=1JftIkcUnr#?secret=aB9DVSCA9X\" data-secret=\"aB9DVSCA9X\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And, finally, a diary entry unto myself:  <em>BBC Radio 4<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/programmes\/m001r18n\">Start the Week on Monday, 2 October<\/a> &#8211; &#8220;The Iliad and the right to rule&#8221;.  Adam Rutherford and his guests EMILY WILSON, Mary Beard and Ben Riley-Smith &#8220;explore the battle for power and the right to rule&#8221;. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I look forward so much to reading, reflecting upon, living with, <em>this<\/em> Iliad just <a data-type=\"category\" data-id=\"13\" href=\"https:\/\/stolb01web.ddns.net\/wordpress\/?cat=13\">as I did a couple of years ago <\/a>with<em> <\/em>the <em>Odyssey<\/em> &#8216;according to Emily Wilson&#8217; so to speak &#8211; a year long project that gave me great personal pleasure. But, first, I must get the book! And that seems easier said than done at the moment &#8211; in Germany at least!* But it does mean I can mull over a good (and doable) reading (and writing) schedule without undue haste.
